Janis Kelly was born in Glasgow, studied at the RSAMD and RCM and won many awards including the Anna Innstone Award from Capital Radio, scholarships from the Arts Council, the Countess of Munster, Caird, the Royal Society of Arts and many others. She made her debut at the English National Opera in 1980 as Amor in the Coronation of Poppea and has since appeared in Peter Grimes, The Turn of the Screw, Anna Karenina, Akhnaten, Orpheus in the Underworld, The Magic Flute, Mikado, and Rose in Street Scene (a co-production with Scottish Opera). She is a prominent member of Opera Factory, appearing as Callisto/Juno (La Callisto) and Despina, Zerlina and Susanna in Mozart's operas at the South Bank and on Channel 4, and recently to great acclaim as Ottavia in The Coronation of Poppea. She has also appeared with Opera North, Anchorage Civic Opera, Handel Opera, at the Midem Festival in Cannes, and with Scottish Opera. She has appeared frequently on the concert platform throughout the world including a debut recital in Geneva, and recently recorded music by Mozart and Puccini for the soundtrack of Inspector Morse on Virgin Records.
