Eleanor Bennett was born in Glasgow and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where she won many prizes. She was also awarded scholarships to take part in masterclasses at the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies. In 1983 Eleanor joined Scottish Opera singing Bellezza in L'Egisto. In 1984-85 season she joined Opera-go-Round as Mercedes on their Scottish tour of Carmen. In June 1985 she created the role of Bertha in the premier of Hedda Gabler by Edward Harper for Scottish Opera. Eleanor joined Glyndebourne Chorus in 1986. She made her touring debut in 1987 singing the Little Owl in Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges and made her Glyndebourne Festival debut singing The Shepherd in the same production in 1988. She sang the roles of Annina, La Traviata, and Feklusa, Katya Kabanova, for Glyndebourne Touring Opera this year. In 1990 Eleanor joined Opera 80 to sing the role of Valencienne in The Merry Widow. She also took part in the Almeida Festival, in the World Premier of Europa 3 by John Cage, which toured to Berlin.
